Boho Buttons: A Fun and Easy DIY Paper Craft

Creating your own buttons is a quick and simple DIY project that’s perfect for using up scrap materials. These boho-inspired buttons are made with embossing folders, scrap paper, packaging, ink, and a few common paper punches. Their unique graphic style adds a pop of flair to any craft, making them a versatile addition to your creative toolkit. Plus, they’re a great way to use up leftover scraps!

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Card stock paper scraps or graphic paper
  • Packaging materials
  • Assorted paper punches (1″ – 1 ½″ and 1/8″)
  • Glue
  • Embossing folders (any design you prefer)
  • Embossing/die cutting machine
  • Ink pad (small size works best)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Paper Scraps: Start by arranging small scraps of card stock on your chosen embossing folder. Use the debossed (pressed) side of the folder for a unique texture. Glue the embossed scrap to a circle of packaging material that you’ve punched out using a paper punch (or trace and cut to size if you don’t have a punch).

  2. Create Button Holes: If you like, use a real button as a template for the button holes, or measure and mark where the holes should go using a ruler or grid. You can also make a reusable template for future projects, which will speed up the process next time!

  3. Emboss and Ink: If you have larger embossed scraps, you can ink the entire piece before punching out your button shape. Don’t have an embossing machine? No problem—use any simple graphic paper for a similar look. This project is a great way to recycle failed card embossing projects too!

  4. Add Color and Details: Lightly swipe a small ink pad over the surface of your button to highlight the embossed texture. It doesn’t need to be perfect—this adds to the boho charm! If desired, edge the buttons with ink, a metallic pen, or marker for a polished finish.

  5. Finishing Touches: Punch the button holes, and your buttons are ready to use! You can also store your button templates alongside your finished buttons to have them handy for future projects.

Uses:

These paper buttons are great for a variety of creative projects—from closures to embellishing cards or scrapbooks. Make them in different colors and designs, and you’ll have a stylish stash of embellishments for future crafts!

Happy paper crafting!
