DIY Assorted Paper Spools
If you're looking to get your craft room organized before the holiday crafting rush, these DIY paper spools are a perfect way to use up scrap materials while keeping things neat. You can also embellish them for pretty packaging—ideal if you run a craft shop selling ribbons, lace, or yarn. They're also great for sending happy mail, adding extras to your journals, or simply for practical use. With a variety of sizes and creative ideas, these spools will help you keep your sewing notions organized and easily accessible.
Materials You'll Need:
- Packaging material
- Paper: Scrapbook paper or heavier paper. For lightweight paper, double it up and glue for extra sturdiness.
- Assorted paper punches: Use a standard hole punch, a 1/8" hole punch, and circular punches (sizes shown in the video: 5/8", 1", 1 1/2").
- Glue: Any glue suitable for paper crafting.
- Ribbon, string, buttons: For embellishment if desired.
Spool Sizes in the Tutorial:
- 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square
- 2 1/2" x 5" rectangle
Instructions:
- Prepare Your Paper: If you're using lightweight or digital paper, glue it to both sides of the packaging material to make the spools more durable and to disguise the packaging.
- Create a Template: Learn how to make a perfect mirrored spool template using packaging material in the previous tutorial (linked in the original post).
- Trace and Punch: Trace half circles onto your cut paper pieces as demonstrated in the video tutorial. Punch holes in the center if you want a thread catcher. A small snip in the hole will make it functional for holding threads. For a decorative touch, use a corner punch or simply round the corners.
- Make Small Circle Spools: Follow the video instructions to create the smaller spools for wrapping short pieces of lace, ribbon, or thread.
- Decorate and Store: Personalize your spools by decorating them to match your style. Wind ribbon, lace, or thread around the spools and store them with the ribbon facing up for easy color selection. Smaller circle spools can also be used as embellishments or for storing gathered snippets of lace or ribbon.
Tips:
- Keep your spools in a box for easy access and neat storage.
- Create a collection of small circle spools and keep them in a container on your craft table for quick use.
These simple yet beautiful paper spools are perfect for organizing your craft supplies, creating attractive packaging, or adding a special touch to your journals and mail. Plus, they’re a great way to tidy up all your loose ribbons, lace, yarn, and thread.
Happy paper crafting!
