DIY Faux Wax Seals
These faux wax seals mimic the rich color, glossy finish, and intricate detail of traditional stamped wax—perfect for decorative accents or sealing envelopes and documents. Create a stash to keep on hand for quick embellishments. Paired with folded documents they elevate ephemera with a vintage-inspired presentation that works beautifully in journals of any size.

To make them, you’ll need packaging, a wax candle, embossing folders, and a colorant such as alcohol markers or watercolor. Choose a medium that dries completely and won’t flake, peel, or stain, so your embossing folders stay protected. You’ll also need glue, circle punches (or scissors if you prefer to cut by hand), and a hair dryer to melt the wax.
After coloring your packaging and allowing it to dry, apply a thin layer of glue over the surface. This prevents the wax from soaking in and helps achieve a crisp, detailed impression. Melt a thin layer of wax—too much can cause cracking. If cracks do appear, simply reheat the wax briefly and they will smooth out.
For the folded documents, gather letters or papers, scrap paper for tabs, and glue. Decorative punches can add extra detail, but simple tag-style corners work just as well. Fold larger documents down to your desired size for easy tucking into journals.

These faux wax seals are a charming alternative to stickers or traditional wax stamping, adding a timeless touch to your projects. Combined with folded documents, they bring an extra layer of antique-inspired beauty to your ephemera.
Happy paper crafting!
