DIY Real Rust In Minutes
Share
Create beautifully aged metal accents in minutes using simple household ingredients. This easy technique gives your embellishments an authentic, timeworn patina—perfect for adding vintage charm to your projects.

What you’ll need:
- White vinegar
- Hydrogen peroxide (3% is fine)
- A pinch of salt
- Metal items (try a variety for different effects)
Gather items like paper clips, safety pins, bulb pins, brads, metal book corners, old jewelry, or chains. Different metals can produce unique finishes.
How to do it:
In a jar or small container, combine the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, then add a pinch of salt. Stir gently and place your metal items into the mixture, making sure they are fully submerged. Let them soak for 30–60 minutes, checking periodically. Leaving them longer can deepen the rusted look, but may also weaken the items, so keep an eye on them.
Once you achieve the color you like, remove the items and let them dry. The leftover solution can be used to stain paper or transferred into a spray bottle to create a real rust effect on other surfaces.
Note: Hydrogen peroxide can lose strength over time, so the mixture may not be as effective for future rusting—but any color you’ve already created will remain.
Happy paper crafting!
