Earthy Fossil Embellishments
Create Organic, Nature-Inspired Accents with Watercolor and Stamping
Turn simple materials into beautiful, earthy embellishments that look like miniature fossils or ceramic pieces. These handcrafted “buttons” are displayed on a die-cut circle of map-print scrapbook paper, adding a sense of adventure and discovery. You'll be able to follow along with the included photos and video tutorial.
Using a watercolor and stamping masterboard technique, you can create buttons, charms, tags, paperclips, or even ornaments and mobiles. Dangle your pieces from driftwood for a nature-inspired hanging sculpture.
Start with any watercolor paper and don’t stress about perfection. Use stamps of your choice, but make sure your ink is waterproof to prevent smudging. Any grade of watercolor will work fine, and you can experiment with color blending or metallic accents to mimic mineral veins and striations.
To finish, apply a high-gloss acrylic medium of your choice. This not only protects your work but also enhances the depth and vibrancy of the watercolor, giving it a kiln-fired look. Apply in thin layers—several coats if brushing or just one or two if using a spray. To avoid brush marks, spread the liquid using your fingertip.
If making buttons, note that the embellishments are made of three layers of paper, so use a strong punch. Try a variety of sizes and shapes. You can display them sewn onto a circular map piece or create a custom button card for gifting to fellow crafters.
Let this earthy technique take you on your next creative journey.
Happy paper crafting!
