Magazine Rubbings Part 2

Join me for another simple and creative technique using a water/alcohol mixture to distress magazine images. In this session, I’ll be experimenting with different embossing folder combinations, exploring various tones of magazine images, and sharing quick touch-up tips. I'll also show you how to give your finished images a deckle edge for that perfect final touch.

Materials

Here's what you'll need:

  • Sizzix die-cutting/embossing machine (or any other brand)
  • Magazine images
  • Base materials
  • 50/50 water and rubbing alcohol mixture
  • Soft cloth
  • Glue
  • Scissors or a tear ruler

Instructions

  1. Prepare the base: Start by selecting your focal image and glue it onto your base.
  2. Enhance the image: Tear strips of additional magazine images and randomly glue them around your focal point to add depth and interest.
  3. Let it dry: Ensure the image is completely dry before proceeding.
  4. Emboss the image: Use your embossing machine to create texture on the image.
  5. Distressing: Lightly spray the image with your water/alcohol mixture, then gently rub the raised areas with a soft cloth. After a few sprays, you’ll notice the ink begins to lift, creating a distressed look. Different magazines and inks will react differently, so experiment to see which ones give you the best results. Lighter tones may not provide enough contrast for this effect.
  6. Touch-ups: If any areas need fixing, you can use DIY washi tape or fill in spots with ink.
  7. Finishing touches: Add a border and brush a thin layer of glue over the entire image to secure any loose edges.

This fun technique is perfect for creating unique cards or mixed media projects. Once finished, you may need to press the image under book weights to flatten it. If you prefer, apply a backing paper to the reverse side for writing, especially if you don’t want the embossing to show through.
