Primitive Printing
Turn ordinary packaging materials into unique handmade printing tools for creating one-of-a-kind backgrounds and pages. Simple cardboard strips can be transformed into geometric shapes that produce interesting textures and repeating patterns with just a little paint.

To get started, gather some lightweight cardboard packaging that can be bent easily, tape, paper, and your favorite painting medium such as watercolor, gouache, acrylic paint, or ink.
Cut the cardboard into strips and fold them into simple shapes like zig zags, circles or triangles. Secure with tape, making sure one edge remains even and smooth for printing. Apply paint to the edge by brushing it on or dipping it directly into your medium.
Press the painted edge onto paper to reveal your design. Experiment with different shapes and colors to create a variety of effects. As the cardboard absorbs moisture, the printed marks become more visible.
Cover an entire sheet with repeating motifs or combine several shapes to build layered, abstract designs. Finish by adding hand-drawn details, doodles, or contrasting marks to complete your composition.
A few scraps of packaging and some paint are all it takes to create endless custom prints for journals, cards, collage projects, and mixed media art.
Happy paper crafting!
